It’s most common in men and women under 25 years of age. You don’t need to have had lots of sexual partners to be at risk. Most people with Chlamydia have no symptoms, so they may not know they have the infection. If there are symptoms, they usually show up 1-3 weeks after coming into contact with Chlamydia. If left untreated, Chlamydia can spread to other parts of the body and this can lead to long term health problems, such as infertility (not being able to have a baby) and pain, especially in the abdomen (area below your belly button). What is the Chlamydia screen? The test is FREE, simple and painless. You don’t even have to be examined. It’s confidential too which means we won’t tell anyone you’ve been tested, not even your GP, without your consent. Both men and women can provide a urine (wee) sample. If you’re female you can also take a swab from the entrance to your vagina if you prefer you do it yourself and it’s easier than inserting a tampon. The test will only tell you if you have chlamydia; it won’t tell you about other infections. You’ll be asked to fill in a form ask for help with this if you want. We need to have a way of contacting you with the result. This can be your mobile number, address or email. There are other questions on the form; you don't have to answer all of them if you don't want to, but it helps if you do. What happens next? After you get screened, your result is sent from the laboratory to your local Chlamydia screening office. They will arrange for you (and only you) to be notified of your results either by text, e-mail, phone web or post you decide. They’ll also send details of your test result, but NOT your name, to the Health Protection Agency. They count the number of people with chlamydia so that they can monitor the situation to make sure that people get the best treatment. The place where you had your test will have a copy of your result. We won’t tell anyone else that you’ve been tested, not even your GP, without your consent. Treatment? The good news is that chlamydia is easy to treat. If you have chlamydia, you’ll be given free antibiotics to clear it. Remember though, that whilst chlamydia is easily treated, it should be treated as early as possible to prevent future complications. We’ll also talk to you about the people you have recently had sex with. It’s important you do not have sex until you and your current partner(s) have finished the antibiotics. Remember; antibiotics can stop the contraceptive pill or patch from working. To prevent getting another Chlamydia infection, remember to use a condom and ask your partner to get tested. We’ll help arrange for you and your partner to have FREE treatment at a convenient location. |
