Dispensing Prescriptions

We dispense both NHS and private prescriptions. At least one pharmacist is always on duty during opening hours to supervise the dispensing of prescriptions and to offer help and advice when required. We carry a wide range of medicines in stock. In addition, we are usually able to obtain foreign and unusual products not marketed in this country for specific orders. Our computer system keeps a record of all the medication we dispense in order to check for any possible interaction with other medicines.

We are fully EPS (electronic prescription service) R2 compliant. If your surgery is also compliant, your prescriptions can be sent digitally to this pharmacy. We will then dispense them and have them ready to collect when you arrive. In order for your prescriptions to be sent electronically, you need to nominate Wicker Pharmacy as your chosen pharmacy. Repeat Medication?

We want to make ordering and dispensing your repeat medication as easy as possibly, and so have set up our managed repeat service to take all the hard work away from you. Each month we contact you to check what medication you require, order the prescriptions, dispense the medication and then either deliver the items to your home or text you when they are ready to be collected. This service is offered free of charge to people living in Sheffield. If you wish to take advantage of this service, complete our online sign up form and we’ll do the rest.

Emergency Supplies

Under certain circumstances (set out in the Medicines Act) we are able to make an emergency supply of a prescription only medicine. This is intended for genuine emergencies only. There may be a charge for this service.

Wicker Meds-on-Time

In order to provide help to patients in the community who are experiencing difficulties in managing their medication regime, we have developed our Wicker Meds-on-Time department. Here we arrange home visits to discuss medication and then dispense the drugs into monitored dosage systems. This packaging system divides a patient’s medication in to time-specific blister, ensuring the patient takes the right medicines at the right time. We can provide medication reminder charts and medication administration record charts, if required.

We can also provide advice and support for patients who struggle to remember to take their medications.

Care Homes

We offer a service of delivering prescriptions, monitoring drug storage and offering advice to Residential and Nursing Homes in the area. This service aims to ensure the proper and effective ordering of medicines and appliances (medical devices) and their clinical and cost effective use.

Self Care:

Medical Products

We sell a wide range of pharmacy and health related products. Our staff are fully trained and able to offer expert advice for all the products we sell.

Areas we specialise in include:

  • The supply and service of Nebulisers.
  • Stoma and Incontinence Supplies
  • Hosiery Products

We also stock a wide range of first aid kits and items, self diagnosis and treatment equipment and a range of surgical products. We are usually able to source almost any product, so if you need something and are struggling to find it, please contact us and we’ll do our best to help.

Minor Ailments

We operate the Sheffield minor ailments scheme designed for patients who have a good idea of what is wrong with them and just need the medication required to get them back on the road to recovery. Talk to our pharmacists who can diagnose many minor ailments and offer advice and if necessary provide the appropriate treatment.

This scheme is designed to treat active conditions and therefore there is a limit of one consultation for the same condition in a 4 week period. There is a simple registration process which we will need to complete with you the first time you make use of the service.

If you are exempt from paying for your prescriptions you will receive your treatment free of charge and if you pay for your prescriptions the normal rules apply. The scheme applies to all registered patients in the Sheffield area. This is an NHS funded service.

Stop Smoking Scheme

This one-to-one service is designed to provide support and advice to people who want to give up smoking. You will have access to a stop smoking adviser who can assist you in creating your own personalised stop smoking plan. We can supply appropriate stop smoking medicines and aids as required, including Nicotine Replacement Therapy products via a local NHS voucher. Your advisor may also refer you to other specialist services if they think it is necessary.

Travel Advice

Going abroad? Before you go, be sure to visit Wicker Pharmacy to get the latest travel advice for your destination. We can advise on malaria tablets, recommend vaccines and make you aware of any relevant general health issues. Our information is updated regularly, ensuring you of the best advice at all times.

Some medicines required to help prevent malaria require a private prescription from a doctor. You will have to pay for this medication - we are happy to quote you a price. Important: Anti-malarials are not 100% effective. Make sure you always cover up and apply insect repellent.

We also sell a wide range of travel related products including insect repellent, flight socks which help to prevent DVT, water purification tablets, mosquito nets, first aid packs, sterile needles, suture packs and condoms.

City Doc Travel Clinic

CityDoc is a UK leading provider of travel health vaccinations and medical services, and the Sheffield clinic operates from Wicker Pharmacy. City Doc offers a one-stop shop for all your travel vaccination and medication needs. We are a registered Yellow Fever Centre.

We can administer the following vaccinations, along with issuing appropriate anti-malarial medication for your trip:

  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Japanese Encephalitis
  • Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)

Sexual Health:

Emergency Hormonal Contraception

If you have had unprotected sex or you think the condom split during sex, then you may need emergency contraception. Emergency Hormonal Contraception (More commonly known as the ‘Morning After Pill’) is available for purchase from Wicker Pharmacy and is available free of charge for 14-17 year olds via an NHS funded service.

It can be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex - however, the earlier the better. Please note that the pharmacist will have a confidential discussion with you first to make sure this is the correct course of action to take. In the discussion, the pharmacist will assess the suitability of emergency contraception for you and can advise you on the risks of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as well as providing information about what to do in the long term, such as considering options for ongoing contraception.

NHS Chlamydia Screening

This is a non-judgemental, confidential service for those who are sexually active and under the age of 25. Chlamydia testing kits may be provided on request or proactively, for example when you purchase condoms or go to get your prescription for oral contraceptive pills dispensed.

This service is sometimes provided alongside the Emergency Hormonal Contraception (EHC) service.

The pharmacy will be able to give you advice on how to use the chlamydia testing kit, how to return it for testing and what will happen when your test results come back. You (and only you) will be notified of your results either by text, e-mail, phone web or post – you decide.

This is an NHS funded service.

Pregnancy Testing

A small urine sample (preferably taken first thing in a morning) is required. The test takes about 10 minutes. The result is 99% accurate and will detect a normal pregnancy up to 3 days before the first missed period. Home tests are also available.

Medicine Use Review

This is an in-depth examination, funded by the NHS, of the medicines you take for your medical conditions. This includes all prescription medicines along with any medicines you may have purchased from a pharmacy, supermarket or other retailer.

We may also ask some general questions so we can better understand your situation. This review should help you get the most out of the medicine that has been prescribed for you. It should also reduce the number of medicines-related problems you might encounter.

Our pharmacist can provide advice and support to help you take your medicines as intended and may decide to make recommendations to your GP of suitable alternatives, if you are experiencing any problems.

The NHS advises that all older people and those taking medication for long-term conditions should have a regular check-up of their medicines.

The review also gives you the chance to ask questions about your medicines, discuss any worries or problems you may have and find out how your medicines may affect your lifestyle.

New Medicine Service

When you are prescribed a medicine to treat a long-term condition for the first time, our pharmacist will support you to use the medicine safely and to best effect.

Our pharmacist will talk (either in person or by phone) to you approximately one-two weeks after you first receive the medicine to see how you are getting on with it and to discuss any problems you may have. A second follow-up will be a month after you first receive the medicine.

The service is only available to people using certain medicines. In some cases where there is a problem apparent and a solution cannot be found between you and the pharmacist, you will be referred back to your doctor.

This an NHS funded service.

Needle Exchange
Supervised Consumption of Prescribed Medicines

In an effort to limit the spread of blood borne viruses, we operate a needle exchange scheme. This provides injecting drug users with clean needles and other paraphernalia, reducing the risk of infection. All used items are placed in tamperproof "sharps" burn bins and incinerated. If you find an unidentified needle or syringe, DO NOT attempt to dispose of it yourself. Call Streetforce on (0114) 273 4567 who will arrange for the disposal of the item in question.

We also provide information on harm minimisation, referral into treatment and supervised consumption of prescribed treatments. This service is frequently used to support people taking medicines daily to manage substance misuse problems, but could be used for other medicines such as medicines to treat tuberculosis. This is a user-friendly, non-judgemental service, and includes the provision of support and advice about your specific medicine.

This service is commissioned by the Sheffield DAAT.

Delivery Service

We offer a full medication delivery service, with a same day service for urgent acute prescriptions. The same day service is subject to stock availability and your prescription must have been received before 3pm, be marked urgent and you (or your GP) have phoned the pharmacy on 0114 272 7676 to confirm we have received the prescription.

Delivery for prescriptions costs £6 per delivery or you can sign up to our delivery service which costs £6 per month for unlimited deliveries.
