The Wicker is a famous local landmark. It is known as the place "weer t'watter runs oer t'weir" The Wicker has been a central part of Sheffield for centuries and originally got its name from the basket makers who sat at the rushes on the edge of the river Don, which flows beneath one end of the Wicker. The river and the famous weir are now part of the five weirs walk which leads from Sheffield City Centre out towards Tinsley, Meadowhall and the arena. But of course the most famous part of the Wicker is our building! |

The company was formed in 1952 when 45 independent pharmacists in Sheffield joined to provide a late night and out of hours service to the people of Sheffield. Associated Chemists opened at 61 Wicker, and was uniquely owned by Sheffield pharmacists. Since then the pharmacy has been open EVERY DAY! In 1979 the pharmacy expanded to include numbers 63 and 65. The dispensary was updated to include the latest technology - the pharmatriever - a rotating set of shelves which allowed easy access to medicines. This started an interest in the best way to store products on shelves, which eventually led to Associated Chemists adding H+H System to their stable. In 1985 the pharmacy found that they didn't have enough space to stock the wheelchairs and equipment for people with disabilities they were selling. So they took over numbers 69 and 71 Wicker to open the Handicapped Living Centre. HLC went from strength to strength taking over number 67 in 1986. In 2004 it was all change as plans for the ring road which had been doing the rounds for about 25 years (we kept track!) came to fruition and we received a compulsory purchase order for the end of our building to be purchased and knocked down and replaced with a dual carriageway.! This meant a re-think of things along the Wicker, including new names... It was decided to move the whole company along one with the pharmacy relocating to the building next door (the old Midland Bank). A state-of-the art pharmacy was developed including a robotic dispenser and on Monday 15th November 2004 Wicker Pharmacy opened in it's new premises. The old-pharmacy was then gutted and completely re-fitted into a state-of-the-art mobility showroom and Wicker Mobility Shop was born. All this took place without any disruption to our normal opening hours! Associated Chemists is still owned by Sheffield pharmacists and continues to provide central pharmaceutical services to the people of Sheffield. Here's to the next 53 years! |
